Red Sox claim Mayor’s Cup, again

It’s time to celebrate and pop some champagne corks! With their 11-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins yesterday, the Boston Red Sox have captured their fourth consecutive Mayor’s Cup. For those that don’t know, the cup is awarded to the team with the best over their Fort Myers, FL spring rivals. It is literally a meaningless award but something that can be used to inject a little competitive spirit into a spring when there are only a few spots left for grab on the big league roster.
The last time the Twins won the cup was in 2006. They got a little cocky and brought it with them on the team bus whenever they played the Sox. It hasn’t been in Minnesota’s hands since.. woops?

The Mayor’s Cup could become a three-team race in the future, as the powers-that-be in the Ft. Myers/Lee County area hope to attract a new tenant to City of Palms Park once the Red Sox have moved into their new facility.
Supposedly the Cubs are looking at moving to Florida from Arizona. It would be pretty cool to make it a three-team tourney between the Twins/Cubs/Sox.
