Baseball America ranked 19 year old outfielder Ryan Westmoreland as the number 1 prospect in the Red Sox farm system. He’s a five-tool player that is expected to put up numbers like Grady Sizemore when he makes it to the big leagues.

None of that matters right now as Westmoreland is currently undergoing surgery to remove a cavernous malformation within his brain stem. The surgery puts him at an enhanced risk of severe neurological damage or worse. Our thoughts go out to Ryan and his family. The good news is that Red Sox players are 2-2 in the past couple years when it comes to sick players getting healthy.

Jon Lester / Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma / Disease in Remission
Anthony Rizzo / Hodgkin’s Lymphoma / Disease in Remission
Ryan Westmoreland / Cavernous Malformation / Fingers Crossed

That’s got to be a good sign, right?
