This probably caught a lot of people by surprise but the Red Sox designated Mark Kotsay for assignment today to make room for Adam LaRoche. Kotsay has been an excellent defensive utilityman for Boston, except his power numbers were pretty non-existent (only 1 HR and 2 doubles in 74 at-bats this season.) That, combined with the fact that he’s had a few calf and back issues over the past year, made the decision to DFA him a relatively easy one.
LaRoche should provide a bit more pop from his bat and will start a few games at 1B as well as be a backup for Youkilis’ offdays. He’ll also be used when the team wants to move Youk to 3B and give Lowell a day off.
(Don’t feel too bad for Mark Kotsay, he still gets to come home to his wife Jamie.)
