Another one bites the dust in the battle for Boston’s last 2009 roster spot.
Brad Wilkerson has left the team after being told by Terry Francona that either Jeff Bailey or Chris Carter will get the last remaining outfield spot. Wilkerson was batting a pathetic .119 this spring with 18 strikeouts in 42 at-bats. Ouch.
Chris Carter’s Spring Stats: 64 at-bats, .359 AVG, .388 OBP, .703 SLG, 6 HR, 10 RBI
Jeff Bailey’s Spring Stats: 45 at-bats, .356 AVG, .455 OBP, .600 SLG, 1 HR, 8 RBI
You can’t go wrong if either of these guys plays the regular season like they have this spring. Carter will get you better power numbers while Bailey will get on base more often. Neither one has exceptional defense but Carter is a bigger liability in the field than Bailey is. In any case, Francona has 7 more days to choose between one of these guys and it’s nice to see an old fashioned position battle.
