US Venezuela World Baseball ClassicKevin Youkilis has left Team USA with a left ankle injury. He’s returning to Fort Myers to get an MRI from Red Sox team doctors. Let’s take a quick look at our infield:

1B – Kevin Youkilis: Left ankle injury suffered during the WBC.
2B – Dustin Pedroia: Oblique injury suffered during the WBC.
SS – Julio Lugo: Had surgery on his right knee, will miss at least 4-6 weeks.
3B – Mike Lowell: Returning from major hip surgery over the offseason.

It’s looking more and more likely that Brad Wilkerson and Nick Green will be on the roster for Opening Day 2009. Yikes.

Update: The MRI was negative on Youkili’s ankle. He’ll be wearing a protective boot to limit movement and help speed up the healing process.

Aren’t all of these guys, except for lugo, going to be available for opening day? Also is this just the nail in the coffin for sox players playing in the WBC? Just need dice-k to get injured now to complete the wbc injury trifecta.

Yeah, its looking like everyone (except Lugo) should be ready for opening day. Youkilis’ foot/ankle is still something that I think the team will look at VERY carefully and move slowly on.

As for Dice-K.. we’ll see how the season ends before we curse the WBC but I’ve got a bad feeling that he’ll break down early :(
