Red Sox release C Josh Bard

The Red Sox have released catcher Josh Bard. This means that the catching battery for 2009 will most likely be Jason Varitek and George Kottaras. Kottaras is out of minor league options and Josh Bard would be owed an extra $60,000 if he stayed on the roster past today, so a decision had to be reached ASAP.

This is a wacky theory, but I threw it out there on TBL…

The FO said Masterson wil get one more start and then they need to decide if he will be a starter or a reliever.

Perhaps Daniel Bard has impressed enough to earn a bullpen spot in the majors… enabling Masterson to stay a starter, and giving Penny more time to get healthy.

This makes Buchholz (who’s stock has doubled thanks to a solid spring) trade bait for Slaty or Montero…

    Thoughts?

I had a feeling that Kottaras would be handed the job and Theo’s press release last night confirmed it. Epstein has had a man-crush on Kottaras ever since we got him from San Diego.

I also have a feeling that he’s going to wait for Texas to feel the pressure of having a handful of major league ready catchers and nowhere to put them. That gives Boston an upper hand in the negotiations, not to mention that Mauer will be a free agent and they can always say ‘no thanks Texas, we’ll just sign Mauer!’
