The starting shortstop battle for the Boston Red Sox is officially over (for the time being.) According to Terry Francona, Julio Lugo may have suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee. Team doctors agreed but the MRIs are still being sent to a knee-specialist in Boston to confirm the tear.
This ends the shortest position battle in the Sox camp for 2009. Jed Lowire now looks like he’s now going to be the shortstop on opening day.
It’s really too bad because Lugo came to camp a little more ‘ripped’ than in previous years. It didn’t exactly show through in his power numbers but his overall stats for the spring weren’t bad: .450 AVG, .478 OBP, 2 doubles and 4 RBI in 20 at-bats.
Luckily Lowrie has been having a good offensive performance as well: .385 AVG, .452 OBP, 3 doubles, 2 triples and 5 RBI in 26 at-bats.
