Jon Lester signs 5-year contract extension

This offseason will be remembered as “that year where the Sox signed a bunch of players that they already had.” For better or for worse, Boston has locked up Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis with long-term deals. Today they added another name to the pile by extending Jon Lester’s contract for another 5 years.
Assuming he passes his physical on Tuesday, Yahoo! Sports has announced that the Red Sox and Lester will have a 5-year extension worth $30 million dollars. The contract also includes an option year in 2014 for $13 mil.
Once the deal goes through, it will become the largest in baseball history for a pitcher with 2 years or less of service time. Even with saying that, having Lester for that “cheap” could be a huge steal for the Red Sox. Lester showed last year that he is fully capable of being a top of the rotation starter (16-6 with a 3.21 ERA.)
My long-term deal list from before the offseason: Youkilis, Pedroia, Lester, Papelbon. One name left Theo, you can do it!

What a great signing for Red Sox nation is my mind. I saw David Ortiz getting interviewed in the dugout yesterday during his game and reacted with a smile when he was told that Lester had signed.
If this is legit, it’s definitely a good signing. Nice and cheap for an ace.
