JD Drew: Drew has returned to Boston to get a shot in his lower back. The shot, called a “win-win” by JD, is supposed to relieve some stiffness he has been feeling lately. Francona believes that Drew could start if the season began tomorrow and that this is just an early precaution towards future issues.

Brad Penny: He was supposed to make his first Spring Training start tomorrow but Penny was stopped short during a bullpen session on Sunday. He had only thrown 25 pitches and the team didn’t think his shoulder strength was where it should be so they pulled him from starting. Again, Francona believes that “he could pitch on Thursday, I just don’t know it’s in everybody’s long-term best interests.”
