Mark Kotsay to be Youkilis’ backup

This is something I didn’t really see coming (honestly.) The Red Sox have re-signed Mark Kotsay for the 2009 season for a minuscule $1.5 mil.

Kotsay was acquired last season in a waiver deal with the Braves as they tried to dump some salary. In his 22 games with Boston he hit .222 with 0 HR and 12 RBI.

I guess the important part of this signing is that he can probably play back-up for Youkilis at first AND he can play in the outfield in case Rocco Baldelli faints or whatever it is that happens to him.

But the REALLY important part is that we get to post another picture of Mark Kotsay’s wife, Jamie Kotsay. Welcome back to Beantown Mark.

Kotsay brings so much to the table: defense at 1B and the OF… a left handed bat to compliment Baldelli… the ability to play center in a pinch… and the photo above.

Bottom Line: Kotsay is a fan favorite for a number of reasons! Ha!

His defense is ok, it’s not amazing (except for that over the head diving grab he made while he was at first-base .. oh my god amazing.) Other than that, the fact that he’s a lefty, and the photo above, I don’t see too much to be thrilled about.
