Boston tried to bring Hanley Ramirez back

This is a question that Red Sox fans have given tons of thought to over the past few years: was receiving Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell worth giving up Hanley Ramirez? Apparently fans aren’t the only ones having a debate about that as the Red Sox recently have had a few discussions with the Marlins about trying to get Ramirez back. (Keep in mind that the trade was done while Theo Epstein wasn’t the acting GM in Boston.)
The potential package included CF Jacoby Ellsbury, SP Clay Buchholz, and a few other players. Nobody is really sure who balked at the deal because it doesn’t sound too great for either side. The Red Sox would lose a chunk of their future (depending on who else was included in the trade) and the Marlins would lose their best player/biggest name.
I personally would have been thrilled if the Sox got Hanley Ramirez for a combination of Ellsbury/Buchholz/low-level-prospects. The problem is that Ellsbury and Buchholz are both low value right now because they haven’t exactly panned out the way everyone predicted they would. The chances of sending them to Florida and receiving an MVP caliber 5-tool player in return are pretty slim.

[...] – Apparently the Red Sox offered Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz to the Marlins for Hanley Ramirez, but one of the clubs bulked. (Sox Addict.org) [...]
I HAVE BEEN A RED SOX FAN SINCE 1956. HANLEY WAS THE BEST RED SOX PROSPECT I HAVE EVER SEEN. PEDROIA IS A DISTANT SECOND. I WATCHED BOTH COME UP FROM THE MINORS. I CAN’T THINK OF ANOTHER RED SOX PROSPECT WITH ALL 5 TOOLS. I GUESS RICE AND LYNN WERE CLOSE. I’D LOVE TO SEE THE SOX MAKE THAT TRADE. HANLEY WOULD BE A MVP CANDIDATE AT FENWAY PARK.
GET HANLEY BACK!! THROW LUGO IN THE DEAL TOO. IT WOULD BE IRONIC TO GET A STAR NAMED RAMIREZ A YEAR AFTER LETTING A STAR BY THE SAME NAME GO LAST YEAR. ALSO, SHOW THE CAPTAIN SOME RESPECT AND SIGN HIM ALREADY.
just trade for him already, your looking for a shortstop and hanleys the best in the league. give marlins ellsbury, bucholz, lowrie and some prospects and youll have the best shortstop in the league at a young age
Yeah I’m still kind of torn. I’m sure by now everyone has heard that the Marlins squashed the rumor but I don’t know if I would do it either way. If it was JUST Buchholz and Lowrie? Sure. But it’d probably be them in addition to a huge chunk of our farm system :\
