They may have lost out on AJ Burnett and Mark Teixeira but Theo Epstein and the Red Sox have REFUSED to let this be a stagnant offseason. That’s right, it’s time to make a splash in the free agency market.
Boston has signed a non-guaranteed major league deal with catcher Josh Bard. The 1-year contract is worth approximately $1.6 million.
Bard looked like he was ‘the one that got away’ after he was traded in 2006 to the San Diego Padres because he had trouble catching Tim Wakefield’s knuckleball. He finished out the year hitting .338 with a .406 OBP for the Pads. His offensive performance has since declined (.202 AVG and .279 OBP in 2008) but he’ll be a valuable piece of the puzzle if he can regain his swing. Here’s hoping..
