Boston All-Star Game in 2012?

When I walk into Fenway Park, my entire body tingles. I look around and bask in the history of the place. The electricity in the atmosphere gets my blood pumping faster and I’m enveloped by a feeling of happiness, excitement, and pride. Yes, I said pride; I’m proud of our ‘little ballpark that could.’
The new ownership team has done some amazing things to the park. They’ve added thousands of seats (most of which I can’t afford unfortunately) and they’ve made the park feel more modern. Not only that but they’ve thrown in a few traditions; you haven’t lived until you’ve heard 38,000 people try to sing ‘Sweet Caroline’ in unison. It’s terrible but amazing at the same time.
I think everyone should get to visit Fenway once in their life which is why I’m thrilled that the owners have put in a request to host the 2012 All-Star Game. 2012 will be the 100th anniversary of the park and it’d be a perfect time to play host. Bud Selig and company haven’t yet made a decision for anything after 2010 and we probably won’t hear about it until near the end of next season. Still, picture Jon Lester pitching like Pedro Martinez did in 1999.
…mmm, the tingles are back.

I loved your writeup about Fenway Park. I went there for the first time the day after opening day in April 2008. (Boston vs. Detroit)
When I entered the park, I looked around in awe, someone tapped me on the shoulder and said: “This is your first time here, isn’t it ?”
I got that same tingle that you spoke about. It was very emotional. Other that adding more seating, I would not change anything-well, I would definitely lower the prices !!
I’m glad to hear that. I always try to bring visiting friends to Fenway whenever I get a chance. It’s usually something that everyone enjoys, even non-baseball fans. The energy just gets people pumped up and excited. Unfortunately the pricing is starting to get to a point where I can’t afford to share my love of the park with anyone anymore. It’s gone through the roof.
I have yet to attend a baseball game at Fenway, but I have taken the tour in the off season. I hope to catch a Phillies-Red Sox game up there some day.
But as far as hosting an all star game in 2012, I find it hard to believe that MLB would award Boston another all star game before Philadelphia. I don’t know if the Phillies put in a request for an all star game, but they have a new stadium to show off on a national stage. Boston is still in the same stadium they were the last time they had the event.
I think they want to spread it around a little mroe, although the 100th anniversary of Fenway is very solid selling point. It would receive the same fanfare Yankee Stadium did.
When was the last time the all star game was at Wrigley?
I may be wrong but I think it was St. Louis next year, Anaheim in ’10, and Philly requested ’11.
I still think that MLB can’t turn down the marketing-that-writes-itself with a 100 year anniversary ASG.
Last time Wrigley had an ASG was in 1990, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they had one in 2016 for their 100 year anniversary too.
