Chris Smith called up

Reliever Chris Smith has been called up from Pawtucket to take the place of Clay Buchholz. Buchholz has been demoted to Double-A like we mentioned the other day in this piece.

The Red Sox have also signed catcher David Ross to a minor league deal with Pawtucket. Ross is 31 years old and will probably be brought up when the rosters expand on September 1st to give Varitek/Cash some time off.
