“I think about baseball when I wake up in the morning. I think about it all day, and I dream about it at night. The only time I don’t think about it is when I’m playing it.” - Carl Yastrzemski

One of the greatest players in Red Sox history, Carl Yastrzemski, was admitted to the hospital today with chest pains. His spokesperson, Dick Gordon, had this to say when asked if the situation was serious: “Any time you are in the hospital, it’s got to be pretty serious.”

Yaz is an 18-time All-Star, 7-time Gold Glove winner, and a member of the 3,000 hit club as well as the baseball Hall of Fame. He holds the Red Sox career record for games played, hits, doubles, singles, runs, RBI, and total bases; he was also the last player in baseball history to win a triple crown. Put simply: he is one of the best.

I remember when I was 7 years old, I received a puzzle of Yaz and I wasn’t sure who he was. My dad sat me down and helped me complete the puzzle while telling me stories from his childhood about watching the great Yastrzemski patrol left field at Fenway park and smack any pitch thrown to him. It was something that I’ll never forget as long as I live.

Our hopes and prayers go out to Yaz and his family. Get better soon.

UPDATE: Yastrzemski has undergone triple-bypass surgery. Everything looks good at the moment so that’s great news.
