Manny Ramirez lectured by traffic cop

This is one of the more amusing Manny Ramirez stories I’ve read (mainly because it doesn’t involve turning a double into a single, or smacking an old man.)
Seems that Boston slugger Manny Ramirez was leaving the ballpark, with headphones on trying to look inconspicuous and quickly get away from the crowds still leaving the stadium. He started to cross South Royal Brougham Way, against the signals of a traffic cop who was directing pedestrians. The police officer demanded that Ramirez open his wallet and show identification. He warned him that he could face a $500 fine and possible arrest for disobeying a police officer.
It became clear to those watching that the policeman had no idea who Ramirez was. He didn’t ask for an autograph or anything, but did ask Ramirez if he’d attended the game. After the brief lecture, and no argument from Ramirez, the police officer let him go with no further trouble.
I honestly have zero trouble picturing this happen. It shows how oblivious Manny is to the real world and how much of a joke baseball has become in Seattle (Seriously? He didn’t recognize Manny freaking Ramirez?!)

How does this show how oblivious Manny is to the real world? My crossing the street when a cop was not allowing it? Go to ANY intersection in downtown Boston and watch this happen dozens of times per day. THe bit about the cop asking for ID and threatenting a fine is total crap. It’s 100% legal to refuse to show ID. You cannot be fined for that and arrested is a total joke. Who freaking cares if Manny crossed the street when he wasn’t supposed to. Get a life.
First off, it’s not legal to refuse to show ID. Yes, Washington doesn’t have any ‘stop and identify’ laws but if you’re doing something illegal (jaywalking is illegal, regardless of how minor an infraction it is), and you refuse to show ID, you can be fined and possibly arrested.
Also, I’m not sure where in Boston you’re walking (especially being that you’re in New York?) but if there is a cop standing there directing traffic, people don’t walk. It just doesn’t happen because nobody wants the hassle of a police officer yelling at you.
Calm it down there chuckles. I’m a Manny sympathizer 95% of the time; no need to jump down my throat.
What Manny did isn’t jay walking. Jay walking is crossing a street outside the legally designated crossing areas. Ignoring a signal from a cop isn’t jay walking. It’s stupid, but it’s not illegal. Also, if Washington doesn’t have stop and identify laws, which are unconstitutional, there is absolutely no reason to provide ID just because you’re asked.
I’m not in New York, my internet connection is. But technical details on how the internet work aren’t the topic at hand.
I hear Lowell forgot to feed his meter this morning and there was a fracus with the meter maids. HEADLINE NEWS!
Yeah, you’re right but jaywalking also includes not obeying pedestrian traffic signals. Whether a cop directing traffic falls under “pedestrian traffic signals” or not is a whole different matter. (Also regardless of your feelings, the Supreme Court ruled that stop and identify laws are NOT unconstitutional. I don’t agree with that but my personal politics are best suited to be spewed off elsewhere.)
The point of this article wasn’t to bust out some headline news. It was to show a few things:
A. It’s a hilarious mental image to picture Manny wearing headphones and crossing a busy street while ignoring a traffic cop.
B. The cop asking Manny if he “was at the game” is funny as hell. I’d like to think that a police officer that works right next to Safeco could recognize a future HoF baseball player (especially one with stand-out dreadlocks like Manny) when he sees him.
C. I can’t picture anyone other than Manny having this happen.
