Epstein squashes Bonds rumors

The rumor mill has been running rampant lately about the possibility of Barry Bonds coming to Boston. The whispers have ranged from the minuscule ‘Barry had a try-out for Red Sox ownership’ to the extreme ‘Boston offered Barry Bonds a minor league contract.’

I make it no secret that I don’t like Barry Bonds and I don’t want him here. I already wrote an article saying that I didn’t think the Sox would sign him (link) and yesterday Theo Epstein confirmed my assumption.

“I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it [recently] and that’s really the first I’ve heard of it,” Epstein said. “Again, I think we’re looking more internal with respect to any bats that we might need. It hasn’t really come up internally.”

There is no denying that even in the twilight of his career Barry Bonds could probably rack up a .400+ OBP (based on fear of pitching to him alone) and knock out a handful of HR. The main question is whether or not he could do these things after not facing live pitching all year.

I say no, and apparently so does Theo Epstein.

(Thank god)

Maybe I’m reading into it, but is there a barry bonds hulk smash pun in the title?

Regardless, and I though agree with you about not wanting bods, I don’t know how much i trust theo’s public predictions- he’s a pretty hush hush guy- and if it has come up internally, (which I’m sure it has), he wouldn’t admit it.

Besides, if he did say it had come up internally, he’d probably get subpoenaed by a collusion investigation.

Epstein: “I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it [recently] and that’s really the first I’ve heard of it,” Epstein said. “Again, I think we’re looking more Internal with respect to any bats that we might need. It hasn’t really come up Internally.”

That Epstein Quote does not Agree or Confirm Your Assumptions. As a matter of Fact, it does little to Support your Assumption(s)

They’ll take him, because they have no Player to do what he does.

The Diamond Backs and Mets are also looking at him.

Just because you a few Morons Hate Him, when you all know Most MLB Players used PEDS, at some given time, can’t Accept that fact, like a bunch of School Kids, who just found out there is No Santa Claus, thats your Menatl issue, to get over, complain about Troy Glaus, you won’t, Eric Gagne, Jack Cust, Miguel Tegada, Jose Guillen and a host of others…HYPOCRITE !!!

Soxlosophy: That’s true about Theo being hush-hush. I’m sure it has been tossed around internally but his public stance on it makes me feel a little better that we won’t see him in a Sox uniform. Then again, remember last year when we were going to solve our pitching problems internally? Bye David Murphy, hello Eric Gagne. Not exactly an internal solution.

As for the collusion thing, wouldn’t it be more of a sign of collusion for him to say that it HASN’T come up?

o: Once again, not even the great Barry Bonds can pick up a bat in the middle of July and produce like he could with a whole season. Last year he hit under .200 for 2 of the first 4 months of the season. His numbers are semi-similar for the beginning of 06 as well.

As for having no player to do what he does, Jeff Bailey has been crushing the ball in AAA as has Jonathan Van Every, and Chris Carter. The Red Sox have a deep enough farm system that I wouldn’t be worried about finding a big bat to DH for a bit. Oh yeah, and there is that Manny Ramirez guy that has been filling in at DH for a bit. You might have heard of him, if not then I’m sure you can watch his first ballot HoF induction and learn a bit.

You can’t say that most MLB players used PEDs and then call that a “fact.” Most MLB players did not use PEDs and I despise the ones that did, especially Eric Gagne. Not just because we lost 2 prospects trading for him but because he’s a cheater. It also disappoints me to think that Theo Epstein knew there was such heavy suspicion about Gagne doing PEDs but still got him anyway.

So how exactly am I a hypocrite again? The only player I like that has failed a drug test is Derek Lowe and he only failed it because he’s on Adderall for ADHD. So… yeah.

    Oh Really….

Why is’nt Epstein Calling them Up to the Play for the Red Sox then …Hmmmm

Since these guys are So Talented !!

Peter Gammons Contradicted Epstein, “He said, that Bonds Name was Internally Brought up”

    Oh Really,

Until this MLB Season is OVER, I would hold My Breathe until the END of this MLB SEASON, before Writing this TRIPE.

The Mets, The RedSox, DiamondBacks and Whispers from the Rays Again.

Barry Bonds Name was brought up “Internally” oppose to what Epstein has said.

Gammons Used the Term “Internal Discussion” as well as Some Cynicism, yet Gammons says Bonds is the still a Great Player. But Doubts that Bonds would play in Boston ?

    Epstein: Key Word “Internally”

Here we go again.. Bailey has been brought up in limited spurts to play for the team but got sent back down in favor of more pitching. Same with Van Every and Chris Carter.

You keep throwing around the word ‘internally.’ Do you know who is INTERNALLY in the club? Theo Epstein. Is Peter Gammons? No, he’s a reporter. He is not INTERNAL.

I will hold my breath as to who Bonds signs with but I’ve got faith that it won’t be with the Red Sox. Be sure to bookmark this post so that you can view it in October and admit that you were incorrect.

I need to call BS on the Michael insinuating, he is a slow starter. Bonds April numbers were a .356 batting average, his on base percentage was .536 and he homered once every 7.4 at bats. That kind of as start would not only help, but dominate any team.

  11. Michael Christopher on July 11th, 2008 7:47 am

Yep, his numbers were pretty nice in April. April, in case you forgot, is also when every other pitcher in the league is trying to get into their rhythm. Have you looked at his stats for May? Like I said, he hit under .200 for 2 of the first 4 months of the season. .837 OPS in May and .853 in July.

Also Bonds participates in Spring Training every year. Whether or not he’s facing top pitchers on their game doesn’t really matter. He’s facing live major league pitching whereas right now he’s probably at home working out and hitting off a pitching machine.

  12. statscbl on July 11th, 2008 9:21 pm

Yes in 2007, May was his worst month. His obp was .449, which is better than any player in the AL. Now think aobut what you are saying…Even if a guy homers every 7.4 at bats one month, you are afraid he will come back with the best obp in the league. Historically, May has been good for him, lifetime batting .302, homer every 13 at bats and an ops near 1100..off the charts.
Could you imagine how good he could do if a) he didn’t have to play the field and b) he was actually pitched to.
He said he would play for free, so if you don’t like what you get, release the guy.

  13. Michael Christopher on July 11th, 2008 11:23 pm

Historically, the older a player gets.. time catches up. In any case, if you think he can just get up halfway through the season and put up a 1000+ OPS, you’re nuts.

  14. statscbl on July 12th, 2008 10:51 pm

I know I am nuts, but I’ve seen enough baseball to know he can still hit and pitchers will still be afraid to pitch to him. His ops has been over 1000 16 years in a row. I can guaruntee if he gets signed by a team, he would put up better numbers than Richie Sexson.

  15. Michael Christopher on July 13th, 2008 9:08 am

Haha. I guess we’ll just have to find out if he gets signed by anyone or not.
