Brewers looking to trade for Julian Tavarez

It’s been four days since the Red Sox designated Julian Tavarez (link) and they’re still trying to figure out what to do with him. He will be due 3.8 million dollars if they outright release him so they’re trying to trade him on the open market and get something in return.

Unfortunately most teams are still wary of Theo Epstein and think he’s asking too much for a long relieving whackjob (I still love you though Julian!) According to Jayson Stark of ESPN (link), that hasn’t stopped the Brewers from doing a little back and forth with Theo over a potential swap.

Stark also reported that the Sox were shopping around David Aardsma and Javier Lopez last week as well. Here is what he said about that:

MIXING SOX: Julian Tavarez wasn’t the only guy in the Red Sox bullpen that the Sox were shopping last week. Other clubs report they were also surveying interest in Javier Lopez and David Aardsma. The asking price — a prospect or a left-handed reliever. Teams that spoke with them report they were willing to deal either Aardsma or Tavarez, but not both, to clear a roster spot. But they were telling clubs they would trade Aardsma only if they got enough back to make it worth their while. So clearly, they never got offered anything significant. And Lopez was just out there in case they were able to upgrade at that mid-game left-hander slot.

I personally think Javier Lopez can be fixed, and that David Aardsma has been the only pleasant surprise in the bullpen so far this year but what do I know? I’m just a lowly keyboard warrior.

Stark also said in the article that he thinks it is unlikely the Sox will trade Julio Lugo midseason but after the season.. anything goes.
