Red Sox designate Julian Tavarez for assignment

I never thought I’d see this day come. Julian Tavarez has never been a great pitcher in Boston but he ate innings and was a good guy to keep around the clubhouse. Now I’m not saying I wanted him on the team but it looked like Theo Epstein sure did.
Tavarez has been designated for assignment today to make room on the active roster for Sean Casey. Most people, myself included, thought Craig Hansen would be sent back down to Pawtucket; however, after the trade talks to send Tavarez to Colorado died (link) this weekend, they changed their philosophy and just cut him instead.
Boston has 10 days to trade, release or demote him to the minors.
On a side note, I think this means we might see Kyle Snyder in Boston again. Nobody on the current roster is capable of being a spot-starter or long relief type guy. This could also mean that Colon is getting closer to joining the team and one of the guys in the rotation might get sent to the pen instead. We’ll see.
