Sox Addict’s Spring Training Cy Young award winner

I thought this one might be a little hard but the winner furthered himself from the pack (the pack consisting mainly of Jonathan Papelbon) with each and every appearance he made.

Spring Training Cy Young: Bryan Corey, RHP, 34 years old
Stat Line: 0.93 ERA, 9.2 IP, 9H, 1BB, 1K

Bryan Corey was originally drafted in 1993 by the Detroit Tigers. Since then he has become a fabled career minor leaguer. There are just some guys that spend every second in the minors until they retire, and after a decade and a half, Corey seemed destined to be one of those guys.

That is until the Red Sox snagged him in a trade with the Texas Rangers for Luis Mendoza in 2006. Corey showed up, pitched 39 solid innings (3.69 ERA, 1.87 K/BB ratio) then was shipped back down to Pawtucket. 2007 was much of the same. He spent most of the year in Pawtucket (3.69 ERA but a sparkling 3.35 K/BB ratio in 68.1 IP) and was brought up to Boston as a September callup. He showed flashes of brilliance and put up a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 IP.

Corey throws a low 90’s fastball but mixes it in with a spectacular changeup. He also dominated last spring but Theo and pals didn’t think he was ready for a season long role. I think once they see that Sox Addict has named him the Spring Training Cy Young award winner for 2008, he’s guaranteed a spot on the active roster.

Honestly though, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him break the year with the club. It might come down to how bad the cut on Timlin’s finger is or if David Aardsma makes the cut.

Honorable Mention: Manny Delcarmen
Stat Line: 1.17 ERA, 7.2 IP, 4H, 0BB, 5K
