Its not good news when half of your starters are hurt before the season even starts. Heres hoping nothing is too serious..

Player: Curt Schilling (SP)
Injury: Rotator cuff or labrum
Diagnosis: If you haven’t heard about the great ‘Schilling injury controversy of 08′ then you must be living under a rock. Schilling thinks that surgery will help his shoulder while the club has prescribed him rest/rehab. Either way, Boston will be losing their #2 starter for at least half of the season. He won’t be expected back until after the All-Star break in July.

Player: Josh Beckett (SP)
Injury: Back spasms
Diagnosis: Becket’s back started hurting him during a pre-game warmup on March 8th. The report on it the next day sounded promising but newer reports are questioning if he’s even going to be ready for the season opener. Back spasms are a curious thing and he could be back pitching within a week or be sidelined for a month. This could push all of the starters up a rotation spot and could ensure a few spot starts for Kyle Snyder, Julian Tavarez, or Bartolo Colon. This is where it pays to have a bit of depth.

Player: Julio Lugo (SS)
Injury: Lower back tightness
Diagnosis: Lugo has only played in 2 Spring Training games because of lingering tightness in his back. He tried to return to practice too soon and ended up wrenching his back even worse. The examination shows no serious underlying problems but Julio isn’t expected to play for at least another week. If he isn’t healthy by the start of the season then look for Alex Cora to play at short rather than the Sox using an early option by calling up Jed Lowrie.

Player: Coco Crisp (CF)
Injury: Sore groin & root canal surgery
Diagnosis: Coco is also a member of the ‘only played in 2 games so far’ club. He hurt his groin early on in Spring Training and hasn’t played since. Despite Ellsbury’s spring struggles, Coco seems to be losing ground on CF with each and every day he spends hurt. Crisp should be back in the lineup soon and hopefully will be healthy for opening day. If not.. there is always Ellsbury.
