Colon still large, not so much in charge

The Boston Globe published an article yesterday in which they interviewed pitching coach John Farrell about Bartolo Colon. Farrel said “It’s just a matter of getting him back into playing shape and building up his arm strength to the point of facing hitters. We’ve got some work to do to get him right (weight-wise). I don’t know the exact number of pounds that might have to be lost here. I think there’s some self-acknowledgment on his part that he is a little bit overweight right now, and we’ll work to arrive at a playing weight that he’s been accustomed to.”

The article then went on to say that the chances of him breaking spring training with the big club would be slim to none (no pun intended) as he is still weeks behind all the other players due to an offseason of doing practically nothing to condition himself towards pitching in the majors.

Best case scenario? Colon joins the team 3 weeks into the season and becomes a solid #5 starter.

Worst case scenario? Colon can’t get into playing shape or hurts himself doing so. The Sox are out 0 dollars.

Update: Colon is expected to pitch his first game of Spring Training on March 9th.
