More information has been released on the monetary side of Tito’s new contract. He is guaranteed $12 million during the first three years of the extension. $3.5 million in 2009, $3.75 million in 2010, and $4 million in 2011.
The option years (2012, and 2013) bring the total to a cool crisp $20 million over five years. The two option years must be exercised at the same time and if the club decides not to take advantage of them then Francona will receive a $750,000 buyout. He will also receive $250,000 in incentives for any year that the Red Sox return to the World Series.
This makes him the second highest paid manager in the majors just slightly behind Joe Torre of the Dodgers (3y, $13m.)
